Laurens Hop is a Java Developer at Topicus’ Education division. He has been part of the organization since 2004, where he enjoys working on applications for education. “I not only maintain existing applications, but I’m also primarily involved in new projects and innovations. That diversity makes my work challenging and interesting. Our team is constantly keeping up with the latest technology. It’s in our DNA!”

“What I like best is that we techies are taken seriously. We’re the driving force behind the company, and our input on new technology and developments is valued.” Since the start of his career, Laurens has been involved in all of Topicus’ major educational projects, contributing ideas from the very beginning on how the applications should be structured. “What I really love is that, as a team, we have the responsibility to deliver a great product. That makes you feel jointly responsible for its success.
At Topicus, I get the chance to work with the latest technologies while making an impact with an enthusiastic and driven team. I work with many smart people who each have a wealth of knowledge and skills in their own fields and are eager to share that knowledge. We’re all a bit stubborn, and that’s what allows us to get even the most challenging processes up and running.”
Laurens appreciates the room for personal development and variety. “I can continue to grow, innovate, and develop myself here. Additionally, the great work culture makes me feel like I’m truly part of a team, both professionally and socially. A lot of attention is paid to team building, such as get-togethers, outings, and game nights. Plus, there’s plenty of room to balance work and personal life. That’s nice when you have a family.”

“Over the years, I’ve experienced a lot at Topicus: from programming in an attic room to winning our first contract. It’s wonderful to see how we’ve developed as a company and how the applications we create are becoming increasingly user-friendly. For example, our designers have ensured that the user interfaces have improved tremendously in recent years. We’ve truly grown from a tech-focused company into an organization that also offers services. For instance, we seek partnerships with schools and other organizations to help our clients further. The positive feedback we receive from that is inspiring. I’m super proud of that!”
Laurens has spoken at TopiConf several times. “That gives me a huge boost of energy! I present technical topics and demonstrate live coding. It’s nice to see that people are genuinely interested in your story and your lessons learned. That’s how we learn from each other. As a pianist, I’m also part of the TopiBand. With this group of musical Topicans, we bring TopiConf to a festive close.”
