Davey Schilling is a Product Owner (PO) at Topicus’ Healthcare division. In addition to his role as Product Owner, he is involved in all sorts of other initiatives. For example, he plays in the TopiBand, spoke at TopiConf, and serves as chair of the Works Council and a guild within Topicus dedicated to sustainability, diversity, and inclusion. “My role as a product owner involves a lot of variety. From maintaining relationships with government agencies to keeping up with developments in healthcare standards. So I’m essentially the link between technology, policy, and society. It’s that variety that makes my work so interesting.”
Davey has been with Topicus for a decade. His career began as a student worker, but he has since held various roles within the company, from tester and analyst to Scrum Master and team lead. Over the years, he has grown not only professionally but also as a person. “What I appreciate about Topicus is the space I’m given to grow. If you’re asking yourself questions like ‘what do I enjoy?’ or ‘where can I make an impact?’, there’s always room within the organization to explore those answers. I find that freedom to put my own ideas and initiatives into action incredibly valuable. I truly experience an open culture where appreciation and self-development are top priorities.”
Davey emphasizes: “Being different is actually a good thing. At Topicus, you’re not only given the space to be yourself, but you’re encouraged to make a difference.”
“When I look back on the past few years, it’s not just the technical achievements I’m proud of. It’s mainly the impact I’ve been able to make in a different way. For example, I’m one of the founders of the DD&I Guild, a group dedicated to raising awareness about sustainability, diversity, and inclusion. We’ve really gotten something off the ground with that. We started with a small group, and now there are more than thirty active members. The fact that these topics are now on the agenda at Topicus makes me proud.”
In addition, Davey looks back with satisfaction on his contributions to TopiConf, the annual conference. “I’ve given two presentations—one on diversity and inclusion, and the last one on introverted leadership. It was amazing to speak in front of such a large audience and see that people could relate to my story. That remains one of the best moments of my career.”
